A Romanian Air Force C-27J Spartan aircraft, configured for medical missions, took off today from the 90th Air Transport Base in Otopeni at the request of the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU) to carry out a humanitarian medical transport mission on the Otopeni – Bacău – Brussels (Belgium) route. On board were two patients suffering from severe burn injuries.
The patients, a 31-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman from the city of Onești, had been admitted in critical condition to the Bacău County Emergency Hospital after sustaining extensive burns in an explosion followed by a fire.
Both patients suffered second- and third-degree burns affecting approximately 65% and 90% of their body surface area, respectively, including injuries to the respiratory tract. They were intubated and placed on mechanical ventilation in the Intensive Care Unit.
Following initial stabilization and the administration of emergency treatments, including surgical debridement of the burns, doctors decided to transfer the patients to a specialized burn center abroad, as no beds were available in major burn units at the national level.
The medical team monitoring the patients during the flight consisted of specialists from the Romanian Air Force and the Bucharest Emergency Clinical Hospital. The aircraft was fully equipped to provide advanced life support throughout the transport.
