A woman was found dead after a fire broke out in a residential building in the eastern Romanian city of Bacău on Thursday, emergency authorities said.
Military firefighters were dispatched to the scene on Mircea Eliade Street after receiving reports of a blaze inside an apartment building. Initial response teams included two fire engines equipped with water and foam, an aerial ladder truck, a rescue vehicle and a SMURD emergency medical crew.
Intervention forces were later reinforced with two additional fire engines and an ambulance from the County Ambulance Service.
According to authorities, the fire started in an apartment located on the fourth floor of the building. Fire crews worked to evacuate residents, contain and extinguish the flames, and prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring apartments.
Around 100 residents managed to evacuate the building on their own, while firefighters assisted six others in leaving the premises safely.
The blaze was eventually brought under control and extinguished. However, it destroyed property inside the affected apartment and damaged approximately 100 square meters of the building’s roof. Firefighters said the rapid response prevented the flames from spreading to other apartments.
Two people suffered smoke inhalation and were transported by medical teams to the Emergency Receiving Unit for treatment.
Inside the apartment where the fire originated, rescuers discovered the body of a woman believed to be about 58 years old.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the probable cause of the fire.
