Passengers departing from George Enescu International Airport in Bacău were treated to a surprise cultural performance on Aug. 19 as Romania marked the 145th anniversary of the birth of composer George Enescu with a musical event held inside the airport terminal.
Shortly before boarding a flight to Brussels, travelers waiting in the departure lounge became the audience for „Românescul dor” („Romanian Longing”), an artistic production presented by the George Apostu Culture Centre. The event was organized to commemorate Enescu’s 145th birth anniversary while bringing Romanian culture closer to the public through performances in unconventional venues.
The audience enjoyed a selection of works from the centre’s original production, performed by soprano Gabriela Iștoc, accompanied on piano by Oanda-Aida Avram. The repertoire featured compositions by George Enescu and Tiberiu Brediceanu, highlighting the richness of Romania’s musical heritage.
The performance also included a ballet recital by Prof. Andra Florea-Romașcanu, adding a visual dimension to the tribute.
The celebration was complemented by the video presentation „Enescu 145”, provided by the George Enescu National Museum, which showcased images and milestones from the composer’s life and artistic legacy.
„Bacău celebrated George Enescu Day today through a special event. I would like to thank Mr. Bogdan Tănăsescu, director of the George Enescu National Museum, and Mr. Radu Bezniuc, director of George Enescu International Airport Bacău, for their openness and for this partnership, which we hope to continue through new projects. I also thank the artists and the audience who joined us,” said Ovidiu Ungureanu, director of the George Apostu Culture Centre.
The event transformed the airport terminal into an unexpected cultural venue, offering travelers an opportunity to experience Romanian classical music, dance and the legacy of one of the country’s most celebrated composers before their departure.
