Bacău salaries remain well below national average, with real earnings down sharply in a year

Average salaries in Bacău County remained significantly below the level recorded across Romania’s economy in June 2026, while statistical data also point to a sharp decline compared with the same period last year.

The average gross monthly salary in Bacău stood at 8,259 lei per employee in June, 1,305 lei below the national average, representing a gap of 13.6%.

The difference remained similar after taxes. The average net salary in Bacău reached 4,975 lei, which was 759 lei below the national average, or 13.2% less.

The more significant issue, however, is the evolution of salaries in real terms and their purchasing power.

Real wages down by more than 12% in one year

Compared with June 2025, the average gross salary in Bacău fell by 12.7% in comparable prices, while the average net salary decreased by 12.3%.

The figures change the perspective on the county’s wage situation. The issue is not only that salaries in Bacău remain below the national average, but also that, compared with the same period last year, average earnings have lost substantial ground in real terms.

While individual incomes vary depending on the employee and occupation, the statistical indicators point to a significant deterioration in average earnings when adjusted for comparable prices.

Salaries also declined compared with May

The trend was unfavorable even compared with the previous month.

In June 2026, the average gross salary in Bacău decreased by 1.8% in comparable prices compared with May, while the average net salary fell by 1.7%.

June therefore failed to bring any recovery in the county’s wage position. Both indicators declined compared with the previous month and, much more significantly, compared with June 2025.

Industry and construction remain above the county average

Significant differences continue to exist between economic sectors.

The highest average salaries in the county were recorded in industry and construction, the only sector identified in the statistical data with earnings above the county average for both gross and net salaries.

At the other end of the scale are agriculture, hunting and related services, forestry and fishing, as well as the services sector, where average earnings remained below the county average.

The structure of the local economy therefore plays an important role in determining overall wage levels. While industry and construction provide relatively higher-paid jobs, lower earnings in agriculture and services weigh on the county-wide average.

Bacău remains behind the national average

The 13.6% gap in gross wages and 13.2% gap in net wages show that Bacău continues to lag behind the national wage level.

In nominal terms, an employee in the county had an average net monthly income of 4,975 lei in June, compared with approximately 5,734 lei nationwide. The difference amounts to 759 lei per month, based on the respective statistical averages.

The situation becomes even more significant when viewed over time. Within one year, the average net salary in Bacău recorded a 12.3% decline in comparable prices.

An economy where average wages are losing ground

The June 2026 figures paint a less favorable picture for employees in Bacău County. Average net earnings remain more than 700 lei below the national level, while in comparable-price terms they declined both from May and, much more sharply, from June 2025.

Industry and construction remain the county’s main wage centers, but lower earnings in services and agriculture continue to keep Bacău below the national average.

The most important conclusion, however, is not the difference between two nominal salaries, but the change in real terms: in June 2026, the average salary in Bacău had significantly less purchasing power than it did a year earlier.
